D-Day Service of Remembrance

Year 5 pupils from Grove Road represented the RLP at the D-Day 80 commemorative service at St Peter & St Paul's Church in Tring on 6th June.  They listened intently to readings and broadcast clips that helped them to understand the role of the troops who landed in Normandy on 6th June 1944. After the service they spoke at length to an RAF veteran who took the time to explain his role and the medals he had been awarded for brave service in The Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan. The children were fascinated to talk first hand to a veteran and it was a powerful experience to discuss the role that servicemen and women play in fighting for peace now and in the past.

Aspirations Week WOW! Year 6 had a week to remember the week before half term!  Each day we were visited by a range of wonderful members of the Grove community, talking about their career journeys. We cannot thank the volunteers enough for giving up their time to inspire the young minds of year 6.  This was such a beneficial opportunity for the children to gain a wider perspective on the range of career paths available to them.  A HUGE thank you to: Kat, Andrea, Rak, Jack, Richard, Tim, Dianne, Neil, Vicky, Andy, Charlene, Ben, Julia, Mrs Grey and Mrs Wilson. We have also been incredibly proud of year 6 with how respectful they have been this week. With every visitor, year 6 listened brilliantly and asked insightful questions, showing genuine interest in every career. It was particularly special to see those whose parents visited, seeing their faces light up as their peers learn about their parents’ work...It was the children's turn to be proud! Tring & Dundale

Just before half term the Science Department welcomed some Year 5 & 6 students from Dundale School in to attend workshops. Helping out were a group of our Year 10 students who worked through a number of activities including making sand timers, potato and lemon clocks and measuring reaction times. This is great experience for all the student, giving our pupils the chance to use and share their gained knowledge.

4VG had another wonderful afternoon this week at Wild Kites Forest School.  We enjoyed making beads with elder wood, playing in the mud kitchen, swinging in the hammocks, building dens, making miniature rafts with twigs and pond dipping in the beautiful pond.  We finished the afternoon gathered round the campfire, toasting marshmallows! Year 4 and 5 had an exciting trip to listen to author Cressida Cowell yesterday.  She told us about the inspiration behind her How to Train a Dragon series of books, discussed her Wizard of Once books, and gave us a sneak preview of her new book, Which Way Round the Galaxy. The children then had the opportunity to ask her questions, including which were her favourite books as a child, and which was her favourite of her own books.  Cressida even taught the children some Dragonese, though the adults had to cover their ears as it was for children only! Many thanks to Ben Moorhouse from Our Bookshop for organising this opportunity for us. To see photos from this event and for more news from our school please head to our Facebook page.

1 May 2024  There were lots of smiles during Tutor Time this morning as we held the first Celebration Breakfast this term.  Students from years 7, 8 & 9 were invited to attend in recognition of their attainment, progress, house points collected or their participation in extracurricular activities.  Mrs Williams welcomed them all and congratulated them on their continued hard work.  We look forward to seeing students from the upper school on Friday for their breakfast. 3 May 2024  We’ve rounded off the week with another Celebration Breakfast, this time with students from Years 10, 11, 12 & 13.  These lovely events take place 3 times during the academic year and are a wonderful way of recognising the hard work and achievement over the previous term.  Mrs Ambrose was delighted to congratulations all the students who attended.
